J. D. Anderson 1958 Journal June 10 10 mi. W. Canby, 5500 ft., Modoc Co., Calif. Camp forked. Small stream runs thru narrow canyon 50 yds wide. Heavy pine forest with considerable white fir on N facing slope. S facing slope open mainly sagebrush and scattered junipers. Pine forest in spots on top of ridge but many openings with sagebrush + juniper! Top of ridge is where I got S. graciosa & S. occident. together on June 7. Walked along open slope about 100 yds from bottom. Warm + sunny. Got 2 Coluber constrictor in short order. S. occidentals everywhere on slope - no S. graciosa. They may be restricted to ridge tops in good sagebrush. Returned to camp at 3:45 pm. Preserved all material before dinner. Began raining heavily at 5:45 pm. A good thundershow which lasted until 6:30 pm. At 9:50 we left camp for an owl hunt. Walked up the road past Cedar Springs + on towards Happy Camp. Got a Flamulated Owl in the canyon bottom where timber is heavy (see Sp. Occ.) Many Horned Owls flocking along the canyon. Ward Russell shot a large Owl. One other Flamulated answered words call but it became quiet shortly & did not give us a shot. Returned to camp at 11 pm. Found a wood bat in one of the skeleton tops Ward had set near the tent. Went back out Owl hunting for two more hours but had no luck. June 11. Up at 5:30 am. Broke camp + out on road by 8:30 am. Road to Canby was very muddy & slick
