June 8 Cottonwood Flat, Tomi-W. Canby, 5500 ft., Modoc Co., Calif Robin Flicker Horned Owl Red-wing Wright Flycatcher Chipping Sparrow m. Dove White-headed W-pecker Creeper Or. junco Sapsucker (hybrid?) Red Br. Nuthatch Scrub Jay Chickadee mtn. Thrush Wilson Snipe. Mockingbird Red-tail Hawk. Just before supper Ward shot a gray squirrel right in camp. This should be either a range extension or right on edge of range. Cottonwood Flat takes its name from few large, old cottonwood trees along the stream bed here. The camp is situated on a flat bench (Mesa?). Stream runs thru about [illegible] S to N. Two low ridge parallel to stream with forest as described for most of this area. West end of flat is a grove of small (cb 50 ft) yellow pine. Another low ridge runs SW - NE about 150 yds E of camp. This is mostly yellow pine with Incense Cedar + some juniper. The flat itself a soggy meadow lies between + extends about 1/2 mile to N.E.. Stream is at N side of flat. After dark (actually at dusk) I walked NNE from camp following the stream back towards the open grone visited earlier today. Heard several Hyla regilla + collected five. Back to Camp at 10 pm. Met Ward + Ned then went hunting 7 illuminated Owb. Walked NW out of camp + had on our answer Warner call almost immediately. It gave 2 calls + then shut up. About 100 yds down wood the
