June 7 10 mi. W. Canby, 5500 [illegible], Modoc Co., Calif.
salamanders in pools (permanent??) near the cottonwood camp. Took us awhile to get into this camp since several roads were out and other roads had changed position since the map was printed. Got in & settled by 12 noon. After lunch I walked south out of White Camp through yellow pine, Incense Cedar, [illegible] Fir & juniper forest. Saw several Sceloporus occidentalis but didn't collect any. Road leading to Happy Camp lookout, about 1 mi. up road I took off up a S facing, open slope. Juniper & sagebrush main vegetation. Got 1 Sceloporus occidentalis & greenery saw 2 Uta stansburiana.. Flowers in bloom yet & things as quite green. Wychelia, Indian Paintbrush & Buttercups very common. Worked back towards camp following a small stream hoping to find Amblystoma or Amblystoma breeding ponds. Drew [illegible] on both. Saw no frogs at all along stream. Surprised at [illegible] absence of frogs. Many logs & fallen trees in country - should produce some snakes. Some hillside with [illegible] volcanic rocks - blooming - look good for Hypsiglena. Got a Myctoph evotis under an exfoliating piece of lava.
Note omitted: While driving into Cottonwood Camp from Canby-Klamath Falls road we saw several Antelope. 1 Breech seen at McKay Flat, 2 Does & 3 young seen about '1/2 mi. E. McKay flat. They were all out in open sagebrush bordered by
