Found May 31 Valencia Lagoons Pio del Mar, Santa Cruz G., Calif. Decided to dig in former pond area + surroundings to see if the newly metamorphosed tigerlions had come in for the summer. Dug in all mound burrows at pond side - found nothing. At pond site water was struck at 6" - hole filled up. But got no salamanders. Found several aquatic beetles in deep areas - most secured in mud balls, with a chamber smoothed out around them. Chunks about 1 1/2 - 2 times body size. They probably go over summer in there. Salamanders apparently don't. A search of grassy margins of dried pond produced 2 dried (mummified) tigerlions. These apparently did not make it. These were the only dead Amphibians found either at margin or in dried (still moist) bottom itself. The mud of former pond was ric - crossed with many Raccoon foot prints. One large 'coon could eat a lot of young Ambystoma. Left here at 5:30. Had supper at Red Door Inn. Returned to Valencia + started more dip netting at 6:45. Got 2 more larvae by 7:30 then called it quits. Traffic heavy on way home.
