J. D. Anderson 1958 Journal May 31 Valancia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz, Calif. Left Berkeley at 8 am with Dot Wilcoft. Arrived Valencia 10 am (PST). Began dip net work at 10:15. Dot worked shallow water & I worked deeper places. In 2 hours of netting I got only 3 croceum larvae - all taken in 13-15" of water in extremely thick patches of Polygonum (type C floating leaves). Dot got nothing but tadpoles. Larvae are harder than ever to catch - seem to be more & more attracted to thickets - but always where there is water for swimming. Ate lunch 12:45-1:30 then I drove over to Ellicott Pond - leaving Dot on beach. Worked Ellicott for 2 hours - got only 1 croceum but picked up 3 tigrinum . The shallow areas near willow clump are not so productive now - possibly due to temp factor since they are more shallow & heat faster. Saw 1 might heron, 2 coot & 2 mallards (a pair) here. No geese or wood's brio as previously. Drove back to beach at 4 pm to get Dot then we went to Tiger Pond -3/4 mi. nw Ellicott. Found the area washed 18-May to be completely dry now. Remains of pond has a little water - 2"-4" deep. 4" max. and not much of that. No salamanders yet. Temp water 78.5°C at 5 pm. Temp could be limiting. Made a very thorough search of child area & surrounding but found no trace of tiger salamander.
