May 25 Albany to Calaveras Co., Calif
Left Albany at 4:30 am to check Jervian
macrodactylum localities. Drove E. on U.S. 50 to
Stockton & then switched onto State Route #4.
This road, though rough in spots & narrow, has
little traffic & makes best approach to the
Elbert Pass localities. Checked several streams
in Foxville (1500 - 2500 ft) for Tanicha but
had no luck. Arrived at Camp Cornell just
east of Calaveras Big Trees (actually near
Donington) at 9:00 pm. Found snow gates
across road at this point which made
travel to the Ambystoma locality at Big
Meadow impossible. Local residents say that
there is still snow pack in Big Meadow area
(drifts to six feet ?). So macrodactylum may
not have become active as yet. I was sorely
disappointed by this. Worked a little at 5000'ft
and found there was still frost under many logs
here. Saw 1 Tenbostonin but did not get it.
Worked at a pond near Arnold hoping to get
macrodactylum. This is really an artificial
pond don't I care in surface area. An earth dam
at West end is relatively new. I remember
this spot as a weedy meadow. Saw tadpoles
mostly Bufo in shallow areas (elev.
?).
Got 1 garter snake (T.
), next
drove down to a reservoir near Murphy.
