Valencia Sagor, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Rain fell most of day today in Berkeley - often in
very heavy showers. Undecided about going when
it cleared at 5 pm. But at 6 pm came another
heavy rain so I left at 6:20 pm (PDT). Arrived
Valencia at 8:30 pm (PDT). Still quite light in open
spots - dark enough to need floodlite in woods.
Walked along road cut of hill road to check on
moisture + possible emergence of salamanders from
the many crevices, burrows + root network along
the road cut. Saw 4 Batrachoseps attenuatus
moving about on the damp soil. All exposed soil
was damp - just enough to be darker in color.
No film of water - soil would not pack into a ball.
Saw 1 large banana slug + 1 Helminthoglypta
but nothing else. At 9 pm began regular road
checks along Bonta road from parking area to
least large oak tree + up on the hill road.
1st 9:00 - 9:25 (PDT). - 10 Batrachoseps, 1
adult Hyla regilla, 5 Helminthoglypta and
hundreds of this, newly transformed Hyla.
2nd 9:30 - 9:50 - 1 subad. Ensatina, 3 Batrachoseps,
4 Helminthoglypta, 1 large snail, 1 millipede.
Temp '1/4" 20.8°C; Soil temp 17.0°C.
2nd - 9:55 - 10:25 - Hill Road
3 subad. Ensatina, 2 millipedes, 3 Helminthoglypta.
Heard 3 different D' Horned Owls:
