May 18 Valencia Lagoor, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Next drove over to a small shallow pond near the large Ellicott pond (along San Andres Road). See sp. accounts for full locality. Found A. tigrinum larvae extremely abundant. The N part of pond has shrunk to 1/3 original size. Larvae are being crowded. Tried to measure density (see sp. accounts). Worked here + Ellicott pond until 3:30 pm. Then returned to Valencia to pick up traps. Then home at 4 pm. Back in Delbong at 6:30 pm.
Notes on Aroma pond, Monterey Co., Calif.
Visited this pond between 7-8:30 am. Tanicha granulosa has been here too. Thought it better to check for Ambystoma. Pond is small - between 65+75 yds long + 30 yds wide at widest point. Long axis runs E-W. Relatively flat on south side where there is a thick border of willow which extend around on the east side. A steep grassy slope with scattered Baccharis forms S. A very thin fringe of Elderberry borders the pond except where Willows extend into water. There is a much steeper depth gradient here than at either Ellicott or Valencia. Bottom softer, water is darker. Potamoglena abundant + cover almost entire surface. Difficult snail - steep species + a large bicture clam.
