J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal May 17 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. plants. Work was too difficult to work so I didn't waste the time. Back to Valencia to check traps at 5 pm. No salamanders. After supper I worked Valencia run again. Checked traps at 8 pm (down) - again no salamanders. Early to bed. Up at 5:30 am. Checked 3 traps at 6:00 am (down) - no salamanders. Then took off for a check of several ponds in the region south & east of here. 1st stop at Arromas, Monterey Co. Last year (1956) got T. granulosa here but was unable to return today. Then drove south of Watsonville to check on pond along Elkhorn Road. Big thing but well an impenetrable wall of Cattails about it. Deep water in center - no chance for dip netting. Drove N again to Rio del Mar & took the road to Corralitos. The large Corralitos Lagoon has already been drained & planted. Local people say this has been done ever since they remember so if Ambystoma ever used it they were probably eleminated years ago. Checked another pond near Corralitos. This had been given same treatment as Corralitos Lagoon until recently but is now allowed to remain as a pond. Does not look promising as a pond despite beautiful oak woods East of pond area. Should be worth a round check during the rainy season next year.
