May 17 Valencia Lagoon + other localities, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Albany at 8 am. Arrived Valencia 10:15 am.
Began larval survey at 11 am. Worked with dip net
from East end of pond working mostly along side.
Got some larvae in central area of pond near the
large stands of cattail. Measurements (Total length)
of 12:68,61,80,73,81,81,70,65,58,56,61,51
X=67.08 (51-81). Pond level has dropped considerably.
With still extensive boat overall depth is not so great.
Entire SW end is shallower - nowhere over 2 ft.
Deepest area is clear area just in front of central willow stand.
Larvae are exceedingly difficult to catch. Previously they could be taken at margin where water was shallowest. Most margins are now too shallow & larvae have great shallow areas to choose from. Several taken in 12-15" of water under surface mat formed by floating leaves of P. stomozetum.
Finished survey at 1 pm. Ate lunch then set out funnel traps (12) in grid within the same P. stomozetum area - finished at 2 pm. Drove over to Elliott Pond to collect larvae for food study. Worked fringes along willow clumps & N end near strawberry patcher between 2-4 pm. Got 5 croceum + 6 tigrinum, all in fairly shallow water. May have drove down to Sunset Beach State Park to check on pond there. Lots of people about.
Pond still deep + shallow areas thick with
