April 11 - Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
it is a very ephemeral thing & may not give
them enough time. Lots of Hyla tadpoles in
it. At 4:30 pm I drove back to Valencia to
got some soil for experiments at school. Decided
not to stay over since water is high & muddy -
bad enough to hinder easy trapping. Whole
area is so wet that there is no place close
to camp - so left for home about
6 pm.
April 26. Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Albany 7:20 am. Arrived Valencia at 9:30 am.
Checked bunch of oak woods, drying out very
rapidly. Searched pond for larvae between 10:15
am and 12:15 pm. Netted 15 which were measured
and released. Distribution has shifted slightly due
to a slight lowering of water level and extensive
growth & spread of Eleocharis. Just before
entering pond at 10:15 I saw a Thamnophia
10 yds from edge in some brush but was unable
to catch it. Saw another cruising thru Eleocharis;
& was not able to get it either. On way back to
car at 12:15 I found a freshly killed Thamnophi
on Bonita Rd. Was not there at 10:15. Preserved
the snake. Ate lunch between 12:30 & 1:00 pm, set
out 12 funnel traps for larvae between 1-1:30 pm.
Drove over to Ellicott Pond & began collecting
tigrinum & crucium larvae for food study.
