April 11 Valencia Fagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
road. several large puddled (ponds?) with
10-12" of silt or bottom blocks the way also.
Several trees across Rd. didn't help either. Finally
left car on solid section of road & waddled with
nets etc. to pond for work. Pond is not greatly
enlarged after heavy rains. W end is more extensive.
Barbarea area flooded - but shallow. Worked
along S edge - some spot where early notes on
eggs were recorded. Caught 16. Croceum
larvae in 1 1/2 hour dip netting - working
from small willow to S W most corner of
pond (see sp account A.m. croceum). Ate
lunch at 12:45.
This time included measuring each larva, recording
a water temp & writing notes on habitat.
Drove over to the Edwards ranch to see if they
had any salamanders for me & get permission to
collect at Ellicott Pond. They had been away
& had no cutters for me. Worked Ellicott
pond at NW edge for about 1-2 hours. Got
both tigrinum & A.m. croceum larvae for
food study, collecting sample of food items at
same time. Then worked a small, temporary
pond - flooded field along San Antonio Rd.
about 1/2 mile towards Fairdeban Road from
Ellicott Pond. Got 2 larvae - apparently
tigrinum. Croceum may use them too late
