March 18 Valencia Lagoor, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
First check to Oak & Rock 7:00 - 7:15 pm (PST)
No Amblystoma, 17 Hyla. Sky dark, very clear,
stars bright - no moon. Checked Hill road to
above end of Lagoor area - 1 Hyla, 0 Amblystoma
7:15-7:40. 2nd check 7:40-8 pm (PST):
0 Amblystoma, 7 Hyla.. 3rd check 8:05-
8:25. 0 Amblystoma, 5 Hyla. Hyla chorus
in Lagoor begun at 6:30 pm & is much stronger
now - probably reinforced by newcomers.
Several Hyla moving away from pond area
appear to be spent females. Just 2 checks
of saw first smile - total of 7 - all seem to
be Helminthoglypta. Saw only 1 millipedeall
evening.
9 pm - air temp 3 ft 6.8°C, 1/4" - 6.00°C
soil temp - 9.0°C.
Omitted - 11:30 am I checked the large tin
can buried in oak woods. It has about 2 1/2"
water in it from recent rainfall. 1 dead
Rana borex trowbridgi on bottom. Must have
fallen in during or just after the rains
of the last weekend March 15+16. Still in good
condition - no perceptible odor. Picked it
in 10% formalin.
March 19 Valencia Lagoor, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Woke up at 5 am - Hyla chorus still going
strong, begun to taper off about 6 (down).
