March 18 Valencia Sagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif
Left Albany 7:30 am. Stopped at Natural Bridges State Park (in Santa Cruz) to have a look at several ponds N. of the city proper. Spoke to Mr. Stanley, a ranger. He does not recollect seeing salamanders in his two years at Bell Bridge. The pond in park is small (1/2 Valencia at most) & is temporary. Red Gum Eucalyptus on hill sides all around, Willows at pond level & along stream inlet & outlet. Saw several hydra tadpoles but little else in 30 minutes work with dip net. Yet it is still a good possibility & I will keep track of it. Another larger pond 1/2 mi. E of Park is permanent. It's deep & steep sided - may have some Ambystoma but somehow it doesn't look right to me. Drove from here down to V. Valencia. Ate lunch & then began search for larvae at 12:30 pm. Worked upper end of pond all afternoon - 12:30 - 4 pm. Got only 4 larvae (3 + 1 egg). The larvae are small of 10-15 mm, the egg roots to hatch. It may be that the young larvae stay in thick growths & Eleocharis until reaching decent size. Set out 12 traps for larvae at 4 pm. Checked at dusk 6 - 6:30 pm. No luck on Ambystoma - Got 12 hydra tadpoles.
Began food check at 7pm (P.S.T.). Air temp 10° C R. Humidity 88% (9-50) - Sling Psychrometer.
