J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal Feb. 16 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. see any distance into it. Eleocharis is beginning coming up in all shallow areas but especially at west end of pond. Hyla regilla eggs everywhere. Worked until 12:30 at this then stopped for lunch. Went around pond again carefully until 2:45 pm. Checked pit & found 3 ad. croceum (2♀♀ + 1♂) ♀♀ appear spent - no eggs visible - bellis flat. Drove over to Ellicott pond & worked it until 4:30. Got only 1 egg. Hyla eggs everywhere. Tadpoles swimming about. Saw many very recently hatched Ambystoma eggs - both tigrinum & croceum. Met Mr. Edwards & he asked for my address. They will clean up some wood piles around barn several hundred (200 yds) behind Ellicott pond. Gave him a gallon jar to keep any salamanders he gets. He is being very helpful. Ate supper between 4:45-5:30. Back at Valencia at 5:40. Hyla chorus began at 6 pm - barely dusk. Made 3 road checks but got no Ambystoma. Sky clear & starry. Has been a warm & clear day. Hyla were moving in some problem observed before - Heavy movements at dusk tapong's off to mothing within an hour. Humidity data - Sloan's Psychrometers. 6:15 pm - 12°C - 54°F - 98% RH 7:30 pm - 11°C - 53°F. 97% RH Left for home at 8pm. Heavy traffic - home at 11 pm.
