J. D. Anderson 1958 Journal Jan 24. Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Water was also draining in from the N. shore. It came thru a culvert under highway & entered pond area after main stream. Water moving in pond very turbulent + muddy. Appears to be the real thing this year. Found 90 salamanders. At 10:00 I returned to "Ellis" pond. Got 2 A. ligninum + 9 A. m. crocea in traps. All od 80 in prime breeding condition. 1 crocea escaped. Worked around here until 12 noon. Couldn't do much in driving rain. Returned to Valencia for an hour. Quite impossible to work so I had lunch + dried wetland items to get the road on captured animals. Off for a bit - returned to Ellis pond to check traps. Nothing this time. So at 2 pm. I left for home. Feb. 9 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Left MVZ at 7 am & arrived Valencia at 9 am. Pond is full up. Water still flowing in + pond is now draining out W end into Valencia creek. Highway dept. has diverted inflow slightly to keep water off road. Only effect on lagoon is that water enters pond several yards N side N. Water is extremely muddy, impossible to see anything in water - even at shallow west end. Worked all around edges in attempt to locate eggs but had no luck. Eggs
