Jan 9 Valencia lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left MVZ at 7:30 am with Dan Wilkoff. Drove
via usual route. Arrived Rio del Mar at 10:00 am.
Began working in oak woods. Found a fairly recent
pit (dug for cess pool) near new home being
erected. This pit (described under species account -
a. macrodactylum for this date) formed an
efficient amphibian trap. 9 Ambystoma, 5
Ensatina + 30 Hylo regilla were found in it. In
addition there were 3 badly decomposed mice
almost surely Peromyscus (4 probably three).
We studied this trap for most of the morning.
Made a thorough check of the pond area and found
just 1 Ambystoma under a large flat stone. Still
no water in pond or. I'm beginning to worry
again.
After lunch we drove over to La Selva area and
checked the Ambystoma pond. Found fair
number of fresh macrodactylum eggs but
found no adults at all. Left here about 3 pm,
drove to Edwards ranch to ask permission for
night work in this area. Mrs. Edwards had a
nice adult Taricha granulosa for us. She
got it in her back yard. This is closest yet
to the Ambystoma areas. We worked small
stream near the Edwards place till 4:30 pm.
Then ate supper and returned to Valencia at dark.
