J.D. Anderson 1957 Ambystoma macrodactylum Jan. 25 Valucia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. During this time adult macrodactylum moved down from the woods towards the pond area. 10 females and 3 males were marked and released. All were moving towards the pond area (even though there is yet no water present). All ?? were gravid, eggs being seen through the abdominal wall. ?? had greatly swollen vents. Both ?? + ?? had enlarged tail fins but this was most pronounced in ??. Dorsal portion of tail was greatly heightened + in most cases fin tissue extended beyond normal tip of the tail. Chloral temperature of 6.8, 6.4 + 7.2 were recorded, surface of road recorded at 6.8 + 6.4 and air temp (1/4 ft above surface) 6.2 + 6.0oC. 1 jrnr. salamander was found moving in the opposite direction ( from pond toward sub woods). All salamanders secreted a viscous, white, liquid when handled. This exuded mostly from sides of tail particularly the dorsal half, although some appeared along dorsal lateral aspect of the posterior trunk region. Extremely sticky + made handling the salamander very difficult. Hiwy 1 N W E S Pond area (dry) X X Bochani X < X Bornt Rd. Oak woods
