December 15 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Albany at 11:15 am & drove via woodland route arriving Santa Cruz at 11:20 pm. Stopped the work area just opposite Red Door Cafe - towards the sea. Large area of oaks along course of stream ( [illegible] ). Some willow seen so it seemed worth a check for Anbystoma.
The setting in oak woods is very much like that at Rio del Mar. However there are no real Ambystoma breeding spots. Stream is narrow & moves pretty rapidly for the mile or two I checked. Collected 3 Ensatina, saw 1 other plus 1 Oreides and many Batrachosaps.
Drove on to Valencia, checked pond area between 2:30 and 3:45 pm. More water on stands at north side of pond area - between the two large willow stands. Walked west to end of pond area and followed old stream bed which runs W-E. About 50 yds from westerly most end of pond area & found an old culvert hidden in a Rubus thicket. It had considerable water in it ( pool of 8 ft long + 3 ft wide. Water was groming in to top of culvert through an opening. Traced this water to a spring at side of Bonita Rd where it begins descent to lagoon level. Water was pouring out rapidly. This is probably fed by seepage from oak woods above - Probably
