Dec. 5 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Albany 12:30 pm & arrived Rio del Mar 2:35.
It was raining in Bay Area but rain had stopped
in Santa Cruz. Sky overcast. Worked pond area &
oak woods, turning all logs. Saw only 1 Batrachoseps
and nothing else. 3:30 drove to La Selva Beach
locality & turned logs and again found nothing.
Drove down to pond at Sunset Beach State
park. This pond was flooded over the road. Sun
had set already so I decided not to work this
area now. Ate supper & returned to Valencia
at 5:45. On way in found one P croceum
at side of Bonita Rd facing away from pond.
Not completely dark as yet. Walked the
road until 8:45 pm. 6 trips on Bonita Rd. &
one on hill road. No salamanders! Sky clear,
stars & moon out - quite light. At 9 pm I
drove to La Selva locality and again found
nothing. Returned home. The beasts certainly
need rain.
