J.D. Anderson 1957 Journal Oct. 20 Valencia Lagoon, Rd Del Mar, Santa Ana S., Calif. Left Berkeley 9:15 am with Hillier & Bruce. Arrived Rd del Mar at 11:30. Began work at once. Checked all logs in willow clumps & at edge of lagoon area. Nothing but isopods. There is still lots of moisture here but no standing water this week. Quite wet in leaf litter, dry at surface usually. At 1 pm we drove to Sunset Beach St. Park for lunch. On way over I picked up a bird's Eared gule. The bird ran swiftly but apparently could not fly. I felt wings beat but saw no break. Released the bird in a small pond about 300 yards from sea (fresh H2O pond). Upon entering water it became active & alert. Began drinking immediately. Swam well & occasionally raised off water to lean wings. In five minutes it began chir'g & beak'g. Checked this pond for salamanders. It's about 50 yds long by 20-30 yds wide. Eleocharis very thick. Made about 100 sweeps with dip net (at funizes) & got only insects (Hemiptera - notonectids & odonate larvae). This pond must be checked again when it rains. It stands between a sage covered hillside & sand dunes of the beach. Hyla regilla seen & heard. Should be an Ambystoma in this at some time. Left here at 3 pm. Returned to Valencia
