after probing on this one, flew to another 20yds away & did same thing. passed up the smaller ones inbetween that had no woody base but was entirely covered with thorns. Occasionally gave 'cheek' note. (lowing or fluty note I think) Examined workings & found bird had probed in the spaces between the woody vascular bundles & put in the nest portion Cactus Woodpeckers in this region are not common. I have found but one hole in Joshua & think may have been made by woodpecker. On a day of continual walking in Joshua forest one might see or hear 3 to 6 individuals.
