The ground was soft moist, and not rocky enabling them to throw up a large amount containing about 6 gallons of dirt. The holes were as large as our feet. They seemed quite hardy confidently + frequently I could approach within 15 yds as they stood stock still watching me. Several were seen to run into the dense underbrush. No noise were heard from them at any time. Difficulty in collecting them lay in the fact that a fatal shot was necessary or else the hardy creatures would drag themselves into the burrows or jump into the air and come down run away.
