of almost finger-formation of
igneous material (decayed granite)
In evening, shot Cottontail
for supper.
Chipmunk (Sp?) One seen on
the rocky cliffs of hill. With .22
I failed to get it & so species
undetermined. Since it had many
stripes it couldn't have been
E. dorsalis & is probably E. amoenum.
Many small holes were seen
amongst rock & in soft sandy
soil (Perhaps were workings of this
species). They all seemed old, however,
due to cobwebs over orifice.
Coyote - One Skeleton found &
Skull saved for specimen.
Lead-Colored Bush-Tit - I was
seen on tall Chipley bushes
on top of hill. They was carrying
food in bill; could not follow
them long enough.
Gallinaceous Bird (Sp?) - Billed
called to my attention a couple
of birds on side hill. Walked
uphill & flushed them about 10
yds. in front of me. They flew
downhill on an angle & were
out of sight in the sage nearby.
I flushed them 3 times in all
& finally lost them. From these
three hurried & short observatwns I
gathered the following data: They
were about intermediate in size
between Cal. Quail & small
Sierra Goose. Tail was shoot
