The box is on a dead
Tree in the middle of
the lake. While out in the
boat we saw several
families of Red-billed Ploce
I coming half grown. The
birds, both old and young
were extremely tame,
because of the protection
they enjoy there.
The red-bills cut the
wildberry stems off at
the base and use them
for nests, much to the
regret of Dr. Shaver who
attempted them killing other
The birds will cut down
a large area of the reeds
to build a nest. The
result is the nests are
green and not black
much as at Buena Vista
and elsewhere. One nest
was left with two
deserted eggs. I would
not have called it
a Red-bill's nest if I
had found it and
not seen the birds.
Dr. Shaver who owns

shot an Egret a week
