Hermit Thrush
Hastings Reservation
(23 Dec)
I saw maybe 5 HTs, all of which looked like they were going territorial. One, just below the field (between it and the main canyon) was metal banded on the right leg. In this area of Still, there were few fruits bearing madrones, but a lot of heavily laden toyon bushes, and that seemed to be where the birds were basing their operations. Also saw a few chasis, and the one metal banded bird seemed to stay in one area. Still, no color banded birds. That means in my still censusing, I've seen 22 HTs away from Big Creek None of which were color banded (out of a possible 15-16).
24 Dec Ran the BC nets and two SH trough nets today,
1100 - 1715, catching no Hermit Thrushes
25 Dec A Christmas netrun, 0745 - 1030, I catch one new bird (see list). Late in the morning I also recaptured old Yellow-# Yellow (Bird #1), after resighting him earlier upstream of the Big Willow thicket on Big Creek. I also resighted Red Metal/Black near the Big Creek water trough, at 0915. I also saw a color banded bird drinking from the Yellow Pan trap next to the Still trough, but it flew before I got a good reading on the birds.
27 Dec Run the nets all day, the two Big Creek nets 0800-1700, and the School Hill trough nets from 0800 - 1300. At 1300, I discovered a pool of water in Big Creek behind the large Willow thicket. Suspecting that the pool was the basis for the attractiveness of that area of willows, I placed one of the SH nets
