1980 Ronald L. Mummer Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West Hastings Reservation 14 March Start watch 1030. Nobody's been seen here since November, although I did flush a bird from near the granary as I arrived. 1120 nothing's up. No wakas, no turrits. 29 March Trying again at 1545. A bird was near the granary as I walked up, and since then I've heard a few wakas, suggesting two birds (at least). 1645, Nothings doing. I walked around, looking for potential nest holes for these guys, finding a fresh hole start in a nice, soft, rotten tus of a Blue Oak on the S side of the ridge. Unfortunately, the hole looks pretty big, and there are Flickers all over the place, calling, drumming, etc. The start is located ~ 150m up the slope from the SH west granary 14 April Cruised by here at 0945. Finally a quick look at the birds (light)/metal of a ♂ that checks out as ♂530 Can't be certain, but it at least checks out OK. Ash-throated Flycatcher up here, first of the season for me. Also, wakas given in granary where I saw ♂530, so at least 2 birds here. 1005, a ♀ here with the ♂. Will try to see who. 1040 Holy shit! 3 birds here ALL BANDED! Brown-or/Brown or with tie One is certainly ♀531 very squeaky voice. As for the other 2 birds, could they be Finch babies? 1500 babies? 1045, one ♂ looks white - oBlue/white-oBlue like ♂ LPink-or/LPink-or , the other like but that could be way, way off. A ♀ here was certainly chasing a ♀NB. I suspect ♀531. She definitely later closes a NB♂. Seems like Post-revolution action. Another look at a ♂(Light)/metal (3). End 1300,
