1980 R.L. Munne 12 Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill (11 Sept) got his toe or leg caught in the saw crack while flying out, and he just hung there until he died of starvation/exhaustion. Grin. Have to be careful of that in the future. He was a pretty dried up bird so I'd suspect he'd been there since mid-late August or so. 13 Sept At the Y both surviving juveniles J602 Black/white and J604 Red-white/Black , also both in ♀ plumage ! Sehr Gat. Doreen-Brown(N) wnt Perhaps a more Also here with ♀524 in store? fairly persistent around Blomquist pond and Blom knoll. 0930. Back again at 1130, ♂402 + ♀523 also at Y (see Y notes) 9 Nov Lots of SHill birds seen at Y (see Y notes). 23 Dec Watch start 1115. 1145, some evidence that ♀523 may be subordinate to ♀524. ♀523, ♂604 at old Dom → VO nest tree, drinking water out of a gup hole, when ♀524 flew in. ✖ ♀523 chattered as ♀524 arrived. Also saw ♀523 peck hard at the water-hole at the head of ♂604, so that is encouraging, age dominance, etc. 1200, all the young ♂♀ seen, so they are not always dom hanging out at the Y. 1230. ♂604 working an acorn in the "Main" VO, ♀523 flies over, pecks ♂604 off the acorn, and ♀523 starts to eat it herself. Moments later, Dom - ♀524 flies over, ♀523 chatters, and moves off the branch. 1250. ♂402 + ♂86 Lank/m seen, and I think ♀260 wht/metal as well, making complete census
