1980 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill (2 June) The one I marked with rapidograph ink yesterday (#3) still had a trace on his left foot, and he was definitely the biggest of the babies. I also marked his right leg. The other two babies (#2 + #4) I marked on the left leg and the left wing. Don't know which came from which, however. I'll have to come up tomorrow and do a better job of marking them. Also will have to check on #5 + #6. 3 June Checked the nest at 1700. Egg #6 is hatched, probably today as the baby is small, shells still in the nest. Others were all recognizable from my previous marks. Egg #5 had not yet hatched, but appeared to be pipping, See nest record sheet for measurements & magic markings of the nestlings. 7 June Roosting, a ♀ looking out as I arrive, she leaves late, leaving another bird in the hole, which I think? was ♂ #6 10 June Nest check, weighed & measured nestlings 14 June Nest check, and the little devils gave me scare. Nobody in the hole as I arrived, no perps when I put my hand over the hole. However, all OK, gaining 10g the last 2 days, 18 June Roosting, and I don't think anybody roosted in the nest. A very cold foggy night, too. 14 June Nest check, the 3 babies fine and dandy! Roosting, I flush 2 birds out of the hole as I get there, but nobody returns. I guess they just aren't roosting in the nest anymore. 6 July Start logs. First thing I see is a Juv NB in the "holy VO" above the enclosure. I certainly hope he's just an intruder.
