1980 R.L. Munne 9 Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill 22 May A windy blustery AM, I walk up to check the nest at 1030 (0930). Nobody in the hole as Farriave but a nice new egg, which I marked #5, laid this morning, F presume. I also trimmed up the inside border of the hole, making it easier to reach in and pull out the eggs. 24 May Checked the nest with a feely-touchy method (peeper out of whack), but I felt 6 eggs. Clutch indeed complete as of yesterday. 28 may I watch roosting here, and although I dont see the birds of the rooster, head pattern seemed certainly like that of o86. (Long + sleek head shape). o402 (double mustache) was in the hole as I arrived, but he flew out. 1 June ultray I check the nest, and two interesting developments: ① Egg #3 is hatching! Egg was pipped, the baby making peeping noises. My picking the egg up cracked it a little more, but the baby continued to peep away, no problem. I put a little capilograph ink on the part of his body that was showing (I think the right knee). He was laid on 20 may, so he is 12 days old today. ② Egg #1 is not in the nest!! All others accounted for. After checking the nest, I found egg fragments directly underneath the hole, which I presume was #1 (although none of the fragments had markings). Perhaps it hatched + baby died already, or broke in the nest. A mystery. 2 June Checked the nest at 1245, 3 babies, 2 eggs, #5 + #6 remaining unhatched.
