1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill (19 May) and 0710 (0610), I guess. I would suspect that the egg was laid on the ♀260's first visit to the hole at 0623, when s.l.c had the nasty cloacal bulge. 0845 one case of ♂86 initiating a short flight to granary, he was followed by ♀260 and ♂402 ** 0900 ♀524 goes on small flycatching sortie, on return ♂402 flies over, mounts her briefly 0901 ♀ intruder, chased first up hill by ♀260, then 2 1st yr ♀♀ fly up that way, then ♂86, leaving ♀260 & ♂402 in 1° tree. He returns by [illegible] 0903. *** 0906, ♀523 flies in, ♂402 mounts briefly, she tries to mount him, but ♂402 directs sharp pecks at her head. Strange! ** Back in the afternoon at 1645, ♂86 in hole, ♀260 at hole looking in, [illegible] heads out and pecks and jabs at the head of ♀260 !! [illegible] chatters quite a bit! Suspicious! -> was pretty confused. 1930, both ♂♂ viciously dispatch an intruder, which I wasn't able to get the sex of! 1940, ♂86 lags in a two-♂ follow of ♀260 At roosting, the pair 3 arrived in the 1st enclosure tree late, and just some routine mounting attempts, with one or the other of the ♂♂ moving toward the two others when a ♂ tried to mount. Certainly no happily shared copulations. 20May Start 0600 (0300), already ♀260 in the nest hole, ♂86 looking in, he enters 615,2c. at 616, ♀260 leaves nest (I suspect egg #3 now laid) → At 0655, I get a surprise, when ♀494 w/R / Metal Red-Wht/Red
