1980 R.L. Mumme Melandnerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 17 May Start at 1310, Nobody here. 1325, ♀524 cns/white here, also ♀260. 1400, oh, this place is dull today! Going to look around. Whoops, they fly in from Sth B area, ♂402 quickly mounts ♀524 when she flies in (!). ♂86 here too. 1406, somebody enters the Blue Oak Hole! I believe ♀260 (or 524) but not sure. both ♂♂ outside while she's in! 1415, a lot of in/out action, ♂♂ hanging outside of hole, etc. Better check this baby soon. 1630, after finally getting the frigging hole open (very overgrown, wrong saws, etc.) I discover no eggs! They'll nest here soon enough, though, I think. 18 May Start watch 1050, nobody around or in Blue Oak hole as I arrive. ♀523 around ♂ ♂ 1104, ♀260 flies in, with 2 ♂♂ in hot pursuit! She flycatches (F) as does ♂86 d ♂402, and ♀524. Everybody here! 1155, finally some action at the Blue Oak hole. ♀260 goes in, the 2 ♂♂ attending. I believe ♂402 goes into the hole with her. 1230, I get up to the hole, and lo! Behold, one fresh egg! A new nest, and a chance to get some data. Back in the afternoon with tape recorder for some behavioral data; ♂♂ Association data on back 1740 (1640) Nobody home 1910, mounting or copulation action in the granary, but behind foliage from me. 1730 I just miss some mounting and dominance
