1980 R.L. Mumme 3 Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation (16 April) ♂86 Flycatches (♀): 1730. Only ♂86 & 402 here regularly. Obviously, they aren't all that concerned about ♀260 just yet. End 1730. 18 April ♂402 and ♀523 (hide Nancy) hanging around Yard pump today. I checked the nest hole here once again, finding nothing 21 April Checking holes here on a rainy, nasty day. Nothing. 24 April Checked holes, looked into last year's nest. Zero. 25 April Start watch 0745, foggy, misty. A ♂ (looks like 86) in favorite spot as I arrive. Somebody hurries up the hill from me. 0809, ♀524[♂]metal/, also here. ♂402 & ♂86 here, also with a ♀. All foliage glean from Valley Oak (♀). 0840, this is pretty dull. Calling it quits. 26 April Checked holes. Zero. 29 April Start watch at 1500, with clouds & fog skimming over School Hill. Shit! These buggers have a nest with babies! Old babies at that. I was tipped off by ♂402 and ♂86 carrying food in their bills. The nest is located in the 4th (upper) enclosure tree, facing down. 2 May ♀524 intruding at Low Hay (why isn't she home helping?) 15 May Start 1136(1030) Nobody around as I arrive. After 1st nest failed, these guys should be renesting soon. Both ♂♂ and ♀ believe ♀260 flyin'. ♀260 confirmed. Also ♀523. metal/ ♂86 & ♀260 take a peek in the open Blue Oak hole at the bottom of the hill. Also, saw ♂402 fly to a new hole! In the big, fresh dead stub of the "middle hole" Valley Oak. Looked like a decent hole, too.
