Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
(22 Oct) 1615 Wow! ♀265, ♂184 were working in the 2° lobata granary, when somebody on the PO Hill side of the road started giving frantic alarm karrits (not the true alarm call). At that moment, a nice fat Accipiter cooperi zoomed into the tree, almost nailing ♂184, who barely got away. ♀265 + ♂184 flew off immediately, in an extremely agitated state, judging by their excited karrits. The Cooper's Hawk remained in the Valley Oak a few seconds, then flew off. Pretty exciting. Could have been the 'stuff of evolution' since if the third bird (perhaps ♀539, who flew off to the direction of the warning call a few minutes prior to the attack) had not been around, the Hawk might have nailed ♂184.
Again, I wasn't sure who the caller was, but ♀539 ♂537, ①♂68 all possibilities
Anyway, everybody seen well except no sign of ♂(J)538, not seen since July. Some acorn storage data on reverse of Page 10. Not much action yet, End 1642.
13 Nov Start 1000. Good storage + granary attendance data on reverse. I appear to have boobed in calling J618 a ♀ on 22 Oct, because he looks like a solid ♂ today. Oops! Anyway (core 3, ♀539 M/WKT) DBluewhitny
