1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 (29 July) alive & feisty, but he was definitely having trouble with his balance. I took him back to the labs, where we'll keep him boxed and fed for a few days. 30 July start 1100. J539 looks like a sure ♀. Fantastic! Still some red on the forehead, but in the proper light, & the black is very noticeable. J537, ♀268, ♂68 all seen. still captivity Juvenile 617 is getting worse. No improvement in balance, always keeps his head cocked drastically to one side, skin eyes around eyes very swollen and puffed up 2 Aug Juvenile 617 dies 22 Aug Cruise by at 1100. These guys out of acorns, Birds ♀268 and [illegible] sapsucking from live oak next to road Green-Orange/white 1105 fantastic, J 618 is alive! A successful sapsucking too. Son of westgate. Excellent! experiment J♀539, who was intruding at Rd 1 earlier, also here sapsucking. No apparent Kiro damage, other than, tree losses on PO Hill. Orange/Yellow-♂84 9 Sept Start watch 0830. 0925, finally, ♀265 flashes in, lands at 1980 nest hole (!) sits a few minutes, then flies off without entering. Also think I saw ♂184 white ----- with a huge, green Q. kelloggii acorn, although he flew off immediately 1000, after walking around, seeing nothing, giving up 1 Oct Come by here at 0920 to look for signs of storage. None yet, as far as I can tell. 0946 No action. 22 Oct Orals study break, start 1445. ♂537 wnt/or, plus J618 Long/Orange/white, just starting to molt into ♀ plumage
