Pica nuttallii
(Yellow-billed Magpie)
Hastings Reservation, Monterey County CA
21 Aug While trying to watch woodpeckers at Blomose around 0830,
a large flock of magpies began to move through. One of
the birds flew down and landed on the back of a
grazing ♀ Mule Deer, feeding in the open near some
large valley oaks and accompanied by two fawns. The
magpie stayed on the back for <10 secs, but it definitely
probed its bill into the back fur of the deer, (looking
for ticks?). The deer was not at all disturbed.
