Melanerpes formicivorus
Road I Hastings Reservation
25 Aug Start 0830. J577 here, looks like a σ♀. So does
J580. ♀579 ♀383, ♀269, σ486 also accounted
for. Need to see J579 (I predict ♀) before census
complete. ♀383 harvest a green Q. kellogii acorn.
→ Alarm call given at 0915 by ♀383. Didn't
seen anything, but presume coopers Hawk 0925, J579 shows
up, in σ plumage Scr out! End watch 0945.
1000 at Valhalla, a possible ♀(?) intruder,
DBlue -Wt(N)/Orange
Metal / , So close to ♀269 that I thought
it her at first. May still be, but this bird was chased
by J580, or so it appeared, anyway. Now I'm not positive
I've seen ♀269. σ274 BPink/DBlue -Yellow
have without
doubt, though. 'Metal / BBlue - Yellow (N)
Orange' 11 looks like
the intruder, a juvenile ♀ I believe, I am confused
checking around Valhalla, anyway Could be warp5 baby ♀?
Dblue Wt(N)/White.
Have to check. 1015, confirm ♀269
Complete census Footnote intruder is σ626 from Gate
17Sept While watching at Finch, I sneak looks this way now
again and manage to pull off a complete census! 4 adults,
4 first year birds, all seen quite well.
1Oct Just a check of the granary reveals that these guys have
not started storing yet.
10Nov Start 1300. A lot of acorns stored here, but not a great deal of
action in the granary. ♀ Birds always in 2° sycamore granary. My
presence w/o blind may be a problem. Worried about σ486, σ
579, σ580, not seen, ♀383 ♀269, σ274, σ577, ♀ 578 all seen well,
at least a few times each. End 1410.
