1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation 22 June Start watch 0900. 3 1/2 0913, faint interaction, J580 light peck at J578 who faded away. Q 383 nearby, 1220 end, very boring. 23 June Start 1515. 1 1/2 1600, good interaction, 577 pink/metal nails J580, m/Black, Q feeding. Good! Repeated at ten minutes later, very mildly, though. End 1645. 24 June Start watch 1020. Quick interaction, 2 1/2 J580 pecks J578. Q feeding. Noon, good dominance as J577 twice nails J580, once nails J579, while being fed. End 1240 25 June Start watch 1100. Good luck, 1 right away I see J577 peck J580 and J578, all together on branch! Wow 1110, 3 more good J577 pecking J578! excellent! 12 July Start 1615. - By 1630, all 4 Sadies + Q269 seen. 1632, Q383 + o486 also seen, 1650, another J577 pecks J580, alone in top of sycamore 1700, o294 here, completes census. End 1715 22 Aug Lots of Finch birds intruding (see finch notes), also Q 539 from Rd 3 supplanted by Q383. Those guys lost their 1980 nest sycamore to the fire, plus a few storage holes in it and a few other sycamores. At any rate, Road 1 like Finch and Road 3 is out of stores now. Watching at 1145. Q383 + o294 seen earlier. 1200, J578 looking like a Q! That would be nice. End 1230, not much happening
