Melanpes formicivorus
Road 1
12 June Start watch 1030. All 4 babies seen (couldn't see hands
of anybody, but 4 juvs in the granary at one time. Still
no interest in any holes, although I saw a ♀ looking out of
the nest hole around roosting time. Perhaps an early roost
in response to lousy weather.
14 June Start watch from hide at granary 0815 ♀383 x ♀269 here,
♀383 eats acorn .0851 Dom. at a hole, J580 metal/black
JDom.* nails J578 Yellow/wt-green. J579 or/or also here,
3 ad I think I got a quick look at J577, too. 0919, no fnt
* dom, J580 pecks J579! 0930, J577 brin-k/blk/m
definitely here, a complete census! Will try for more
juv dominance. 1115, Nothing else, but a lot of flycatching
+foraging data.
20 June Start 0845, calls from above the granary. 0930, J578
Yellow/wnt-l Green pecks J579 sharply! Also a mild
(perhaps none) interaction suggesting J577 >> J579.
J579 turned away conspicuously when ♀79 brin-blk/metal
approached. In sum so far, J580 > J578/J579 < J577
J580 dominates J578 > J579; J578 dominates J579.
J579 subordinate to all J577 dominate J579
1000, J580 m/blk pecks J578, while latter working acorn.
Later same interaction at a hole in valley oak below
the 2° granary. 1110 Excellent! J577 brin-blk/m
pecks J580 metal black, then J579. Right after that,
(erright before), J580 nails J579 ♀ also! Assuming
linearity, that means I have a complete dominance table.
