1980 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 27 April the afternoon here. Pretty routine stuff, seeing all but ♂294 in the nest. Today, though ♀383 replaced ♀269 at least a few times. Back here at roosting, and it was back to regular. Near dark, ♀269 was in when ♂294 came and entered. A few minutes later, ♂486 came, the other two birds left, and ♂486 roosted. 28 April A combination nest ad group watch from PG hill in between raindrops. A brief possible dominance interaction. The 2 ♀♀ were on the secondary sycamore granary alone, when I thought ♀269 gave a gentle peck to ♀383. ♂486 seemed to disappear towards the end of the second watch. I hope he's OK. 29 April Roosting only tonight, and although I have a few doubts, I am pretty sure a saw metal, meaning ♂486 roosted 30 April A pretty routine nest watch here, with nothing much to write home about. I also gathered some more pairing data (below). (Page 11) Back at roosting, ♂486 was in as I arrived, then ♂294 entered. One left, and although I think it was ♂294 that left, I couldn't be sure. 2 May A nest watch here, and the eggs have hatched! Birds bringing insects, and even ♂294 put in a brief appearance! 3 May Roosting here. I managed to fog up my scope at exactly the wrong moment, but I think it was ♂486 that roosted.
