1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo Hastings Reservation 16 April 3 birds roost in the "arch hole", south of the granary area along the road. 17 April Cruise by at 1645. Good & bad news. I flushed a bird out of the low hole just downhill from the granary. Bad for our manipulation, if they already have a nest. Good news is that at least one of the babies is still here looking Metal/Green-Blue like a member in good standing. 509 here, eating a huge caterpillar! (F). Also 516 plus at least mauve/Black-white (W) Also 1 or 2 others, 1715 485 Pink/Metal 510 may have also been around, but I couldn't be sure. 3 June Swung by here just to see if the death of the honcho had precipitated a revolution. No evidence of such though, The babies seem to have fledged. 19 June Cruised by, and couldn't & find anybody, save for a very fleeting glimpse of a juvenile 24 June Another visit at last producing some sightings. 517 Pink/n Vel-Black/Yel-Black Cpk/LB1, 569 metal/ and J572 white/?. Very little activity, however. 1 July 570 intruding at Low Hay! See LH notes 21 Aug 4 birds +3 Juvs + 516, at Blom2, roosting. (see Blom2 notes). Have they moved there, or are they just hanging out? 13 Sept Answer; Just hanging out. Here at Gazebo at 1030, & Dblue-Yellow/DBlue see all adults 516 517 Cpink/CBlue, metal/ 509 Green-DBreen/Yellow, plus at least a couple of Juvs I couldn't read bands of, but definitely Gazebo. No new ?.
