1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus 3 Blomone Hastings Reservation (8 April) bit of dye on the forehead to the south. Something strange, I thought I saw ♀494 fly to the place ♀478 turned up later, and immediately ♀494 fought with another woodpecker there. Hmm! 1655 Extra!! ♀478 pecks at another ♀, which I think (or pretty sure!) was ♀496!!! Could have been somebody else, but I saw her well enough to determine no metal bands. My "♂478" has the dye on the forehead, and a metal band on the left leg, fairly certainly below!! End 1715. 21 April I flush a bird out of last year's nest hole. They may have a nest, or it may reflect the wretched weather. 19 June I come by looking for Juvs at 1030, 1215, all I've seen is ♀584 Metal/ plus ♀478 Dblue-Orange/ " and ♂513 Dpink/metal Really, no sign that other birds might be around. 19 July Start watch from hide 1125. ♂513 or-Bpink/or and ♀584 M/Rpink Both here. Juv has a very light eye. 1340, that's all. Worried about ♀585 & 586. The other juv was I think ♀588 and ♂, but wash 30 Aug Start 0810. ♂513 or-Bpink/or here chasing an intruder (Juv) that I think was mauve/metal, meaning ♀570 from Gazebo. Couldn't be sure of sex, but it also appeared to be a ♂. 0835, after a struggle, blind is up! ♀478 M/Dblue-or, and ♀(looking like ♂) 584 Metal pink/mauve also here. Starting to look bad for the other 2 Juvs. End 1745
