1980 Ronald L. Mumme 6 Melanerpes formicivorus Low Hay (8 July) 1000, a good case of J587 pecking J589, while begging from ♀515. ♂193 DP/IR/M from 1800 intrudes here, chased out by ♀515. 1100, a hint that J589 >> J588. J588 working acorn cups (!) at anvil, J589 approached, J588 head turned! Could be! 1130, J588 working acorn after begging from ♀, ♂587 approaches, pecks J588, takes part of acorn. Am I finished with these guys? would like to see J588-J589 again, but it looks like J587 >> J589 >> J588. Again, no sign of ♂511. When was he last seen? 24 Aug Start 1045. ♂307, ♀515), J588⬅ J589 (looking like a ♀, though just barely, and another juv. all here. The other juv was I think J588 and ♂?, but I wasn't certain. 26 Aug Start 0900. 1015, ♂307, ♀515, and finally J588 DPink/Dgreen (R) here, looking like a solid ♂! (I think). J589 renon/DPink d also. ♂461, J587, an ♂51K all missing. Noon, finally, I see J587 unth3K/ Bpink-Blk, after much ado, and I believe that 517 is ♀567. Thought I saw black on the forehead, but I wasn't completely sure. Also, these guys appear to be sapsucking from a Blue Oak (!) over in the nest hole area. Walking over to investigate, yes indeed, J588 sapsucking from a small (18mm (6inch dbH) scruggy Q. douglasii, forming a nice triangle with the 2 roosthole trees. It is about 15m N from the "Starling tape" tree. He even chases ttitmouse and hummingbird. Also, a 2nd blue oak 8 meters East of 1st sap tree,
