1980 R.L. Mumme 5 Melanerpes formicivorus Low Hay 24(July) but I wasn't sure. Everybody seen in the VO between the Low Hay & esthwaile Uthay granary. ♀NB + Juv NB originally in Uthay granary, where chased. ♂307 fooled around with them in the other VO, but he didn't do much. Pretty confusing, out I think I saw 3 good intraspecific territory defenses. I'll have to find out who that banded Juv. is. * → On top of all that, I think I got a full hint of Juv dominance. J589 seemed to move away from J587, both begging from adult bird. Not iron-clad, however. Extra, the intruding juv. is J570 from Guzebo! What was he doing up here with all those strangers? Once again, everybody seen except ♂511 4 July Start 0900. Some intruder here is chased by ♀515 and ♂587. Very persistent, has returned many times, but I haven't gotten a look yet. Hint of J587 >> J589, as the latter once again looked subordinate when J587 near. Also, J587 seems to approach J589 freely, but not vice versa. whit/L6tree (?) J rebal with a really junked-up face (black streaks all over the white) seems to be the culprit, but that bowl reading could be way off. 1130, things pretty dull, although J588 + ♂307 also seen. 5 July Start 1045, ♀515 here as I arrive. Boring 'til end 1145 7 July Start 1045, J565 unt/LBlue from 1800 intrudes here, chased out. 1120, a hint that J587 >> J589 again, latter moves away. End noon. 8 July Start 0830. ♀515 in granary as I arrive.
