Melanerpes formicivorus
1800
(7 July) J561 begging from adult, J564 flies to them, and a series of pecks, withdrawals, and hitches around the tree follow, and I believe it was J564 >> J561. Foliage hid my view so I couldn't be completely certain. However, the behavior of the two Juvs seemed to suggest that was indeed the case. Why would J564 fly smack into J561 if the latter was dominant.
End 1745.
23 Aug Start 1600, J565 shows up, and in ♀ plumage! very good! These guys are OUT of acorns.
1604, immo ♂ A.cooperi flies over, alarm calls.
Other molt hens: J561 -> ♂♂ ! J563 -> ♀♀!
♀ 193 also here, all 3 sapsucking from live oak in the draw above the granary. 1725, complete census and complete sexing of juvs. J562 -> ♂♂,
as does J564. Excellent! 3 ♂♂, 2 ♀♀.
Dominant Juv ♂, sus, ♀, but B bird a ♀. Interesting end 1730.
20 Sept Start 1445. ♀ 563 M/DBlue-White CM & ♀ 193 OPink/M both arrive with acorns. Seems to be getting them off to the SE along Big Creek. 1600. Finally ♂ 561 shows up Yellow/Black. Nice adult ♂ plumage, very white eye. also eat green acorn
Very boring. Bagging it 1610.
9 Nov Start .1110. 1125, somebody jumps all over and pecks @ ♂ 562 while on the main granary limb. Hope it was an adult. 1145, an alarm call given in the distance, ♀ 193 immediately flies from top of granary tree to 1980 nest hole. 1150, Cooper's Hawk overhead. Complete census here.
