Melanerpes formicivorus
Plaque
27 may Egg #6 laid today, late, by I think ♀494 (more confusion). Lots of early hole action, but no egg laid.
see Walters notes, "Pairing" (or association data on reverse),
Nest checked at 1000, I take over for Walter
at 1020:
1033.00 ♀494 enters
#6 [laid (?) by ♀494 (?)] 1044.20 ♀496 enters . 1051.10, ♂473 at hole,
♀496 leaves, ♂473 enters at 1052. 1052.20, ♀494 leaves . 1056,10 , ♀496 enters momentarily, then
leaves . 1057 ♀494 enters nest . 1105 ♂473 out
1115,20 both ♀496 & ♂521 come to nest . ♀496
*♀ Dom chatters as ♀494 leaves. ♂473 leaves, ♀496
enters, ♂521 flies off. 1120. ♂521 enters
♀496 out , 1121 ♀496 down . 1132 ♀494 enters nest, incredible chattering and commotion from within
1139. ♀494 leaves , ♂521, ♀496 than leave.
Checking nest. Egg #6. 5.20 g 25.9 x 19.1 mm.
My suspicion is that ♀494 laid this egg, as she looked
very much "with egg" when I watched her earlier. Also,
she was in the nest during 1033-1044, alone. Although
egg measurements somewhat intermediate, tends to support
♀494 as mother.
28 may morning
I watch the nest late today, and another egg sneaks
in on us, this one laid almost certainly by ♀496.
Egg #7, meaning probable skew 4 (♀494) to 3 (♀496)
Waters checked nest at 0800, still 6 eggs
Start watch at 0823 (0723), as 0.00 on stopwatch.
