Mumme 17 Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque (13 may) watching again 1645. ♀494 + ♂473 together in top of Plaque tree. ♀496 flies from sycamores, mounts ♂473, he mounts her; no good cloacal contact, ♀494 comes over, but no aggression. ♀494 + ♂473 then fly off. 17 20, another similar mount exchange in the Plaque tree! Roosting, I think one bird was in the nesttree, while another was last seen flying up toward Buckeye canyon. 14 may Checked the nest at 0945, still the one marked egg! watching group at 1440. 1500, all seem to be down at ♀, 1620, checked Canyon hole. 1650 -- More ♀ dominance! ♀494 pecks at head of ♀496. ♂473 had been nearby, but just flew off. In top stub of 2° tree. Checking nest again at 1900 (1800), The egg's gone! Somebody is still interested in the nest, anyway I'll have to watch here tomorrow during the prime egg-laying hours 15 may Checked nest at 0700(0600) empty. watching nest! 0820, No interest in nest whatsoever. Going to watch group. Not much going on, over by Griffins in loruds twice, up by the cabin, but nothing suspicious. 1100. Great! The nest stub is now on the ground! It must have fallen between 0904 1100 this morning. It was moderately breezy this morning, and the wood was very soft, wet, and rotten. Roosting, 1 bird in the canyon hole.
