1980 Ril. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque (11 May) 0610 (0710) -- Bluebirds are back ! Fed up with them, I shoot the male, Didn't really want to, but I sure didn't want them fucking up the nest. 0621 ♂521 chases ♀ Bluebird, looks in briefly. And another chase of ♀ " from nr. nest at 0623. 0625, looks in again ! 0626 -- another chase by ♂521, looks in again 0654 -- " 708.40 709 710.40 -- ♀494 is about a minute and a half, head in + out all the time, checks nest, still one marked egg. 0930 -- watching group. delayed follow of ♂#03 494 by ♂473. 1000, Another very nice bit of aggression (4-5) between the ♀♀ . ♀494 delivered a series of very sharp pecks to the head of ♀496, while on a small stub in the 2° tree. ♂473 wasn't in the immediate vicinity, but he did fly to the ♀♀ shortly thereafter. ♂473 + ♀404 may not be as tight as I thought. He initiated flight away from her. Starting again at 1250 after nap ! ♀496 has two "nobs" on right side of forehead 1340, another little chase by ♂521 against ♀496. Still doesn't like her all that much! * -> 1630 Dominance ! The 2 ♀♀ together in the top of the 2° tree, sharp pecks to head of ♀496 given by ♀494. 1830. I relieve Sandy at nest. She saw nothing in 3 hours, I see nothing until roosting. ♀494 went in early then a 2nd unknown bird, one flew out. Hope! Not abandoned yet, even though no egg laid today.
