1980 R.L. Mumme 11 Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque (2 May) accompanying her, karriting. I climb up to the hole, they continued to scold. An easy hole, requires only swami belt and one piece of webbing! Back later with peeper, I see nothing, but hole could be very deep. Will come back later with Walter to open it up. While I'm writing this, two birds fly up again. 1140, watching from cabin area. Not much going on. I'm going to go open the hole, I've decided. At 1300, I successfully opened my first nest hole, confirming no eggs! While I was there, 2 woodpeckers came by, karrited at me briefly, then flew away. We'll hope they nest in the hole. Very easy to get up to, no sweat. 8 May Start watch from portobide 0610. Going to check nest. Still no eggs. 0725, ♀494 at hole briefly, looks in, flies off, once again, she was accompanied by another bird. 1020, Nothing else. Forgot to mention that at roosting last night, one bird karrited in tree, then joined territing other birds up higher in the canyon. Just as I was leaving, a bird returned, obviously planning to roost in the hole. I scared it away, and I think it roosted in the 2nd tree (last years nest tree). Trying again, watching from cabin area at 1230. A quick mount on the copulatorium by ♂473 of ♀(presume ♀. 1420, A definite dom. interaction, ♀494 urking, pecking at ♀496, while ♂473 below! End 1445. Back for roosting, I see and here nothing!
