Melanerpes formicivorus
Plaque
(4 May) believe that the bird chasing her was ♀496! A real switcheroo!
A quickie mount by ♂473 of ♀496 after tail-up mating
by the ♀. ♀494 was present, and moved over also tail-up,
Saw ♂521 fly off toward the Y. 0925, all 4 birds
in top of Plaque tree, looking pretty happy, They may pull
it off yet! 0930, ♂521 + ♀496 alone in Plaque tree top,
♂521 mild supplant, but not bad at all! ♀496 poking around
the top stub of the nest tree, digging away at that hole
start. She still garricks occasionally, even from nest tree.
0945, ♀494 removes sandust from hole start. Hope they don't
nest there!
→ Watching from the cabin (idly) at 1840, another
prolonged copulation between ♀496 and someone
(I have to suspect ♂473).! Bird heard digging around
in the cabin Blue Oak (fresh start there), plus I saw
all 3 birds remove acorns from the utility pole holes.
Perhaps they'll nest there,
5 May Start 0705. ♀494 works on "nest hole" (top of upper VO)
for 50 sec, ♂521 barge-gleans caterpillar! ☺. 0735, 2 ♀NB
intruders here, much chasing, confusion. Couldn't really
tell what was going on, who was chasing, Big Magpie
fight ♂521 chases! 0818, another mount or copulation
between ♂473 + ♀496. As he mounted her, ♀494 flew
over (♂521 was in sight, but not concerned). There followed
what looked like some confusion & pecking, and I was
unable to get it in the scope. Don't know if the mount
resulted in a good cop. 2 ♂473 follows of ♀496.
